So lost in the moment, it took Trevon a few seconds to realize the bells ringing weren’t from inside his head, pealing out his pleasure. No, the offending sound came from his cellphone in the other room. Why hadn’t his voice mail kicked in? Damn phone!

Essie stiffened beneath him, nearly biting his tongue as she closed her mouth in annoyance. She pushed his shoulders back, her pretty face pinched in displeasure. “Seriously? You couldn’t stop your calls even for a day or so?”

He sat on his haunches and glowered. “I thought I told everyone not to call me.”

She huffed, and those magnificent breasts he so wanted to play with rose and fell with her irritation. “Talk about a mood spoiler.” Her pinched expression made it clear she remembered other times when he’d put business before her.

The darn phone kept right on ringing. He wanted to crush it beneath his foot. She was right; the call brought a rapid ending to what had promised to be a spectacular beginning. He’d lost ground with her already.

Frustrated beyond words, he climbed off the bed to stalk toward the offensive phone. He snatched it up and barked, “Trevon!”

“Is that any way to answer the phone, son?” his father snapped in response.

Trevon sucked in a calming breath. The one person he hadn’t told about his going away for the weekend, of course. They didn’t talk every day, so he hadn’t thought about letting either his father or his brother know.

“Dad, this isn’t a good time.” Not at all.

“Another hot date?” His father heaved a disgusted sigh. “We need to talk. ASAP. Here. Kiss her good-bye, send her home or whatever, and get in your car. You can be here by this evening.”

Trevon sank down onto the sofa bed, and Essie’s light, feminine scent drifted up to him, souring his mood. Time ticked by faster with every passing minute. This wasn’t the reserved little chemist from before. She was bolder, more determined, daring. Daring enough to have made an arrangement with a matchmaker to meet a man who would give her some seriously hot memories. Thank the Fates, he had been given the opportunity to be that man. He didn’t intend to blow this second chance with her

“Not going to happen, Dad.” He glanced toward the other room, relieved Essie hadn’t left the bed. She might be pissed at him, but she waited for him. The idea perked his depressed shaft back to life.

“Sam and I—”

“I’m not even in Texas right now.” He caught Essie’s attention, and their gazes locked. He gave her a hopeful smile and held up a finger to signal he wouldn’t be long. “And I won’t be back until late Monday afternoon.”

“What the hell? Where are you?”

Tired of the conversation not going anywhere, Trevon stood and went to his travel kit on the bathroom counter. Locating the condoms he had brought along interested him far more than whatever his father wanted to say.

He found the box, started to pull one out, but then grabbed the whole thing.
